Check Your Reciprocal Links! Most Have Stopped Linking Back To You!

I would recommend that you regularly check to ensure those you have traded links with are keeping up their end of the bargain. You may be surprised at what you find. Today for example I was checking the reciprocal links of a client’s site and found that 100% of the links we had carefully accepted over the last couple of years had stopped linking back. Every last one!

The links we were providing to these cheaters were all good links on a PR3 page - which was way better than we were getting in return in the first place. There was no reason for these sites to remove their link back. I guess some people just like to take advantage of others.

So, even if you carefully check out potential link exchanges (as outlined in other posts here) to ensure that you are getting a fair trade - you need to keep checking to make sure you are still getting value and are not being taken advantage of!

Some may think that the links don’t work and take them off. Others may not know what they are doing in the first place and not get them on correctly. Then the last group is as you said.

    Hi Doug,

Great blog and site. You are right on the mark that many links are not worth the effort, there are many scammers out there that are attempting to take advantage of people not in the know. Your blog and links shows how to catch those people.

I’ve noticed that google is penalizing or taking many link farms out of their index altogether. This is good for everyone, but as you say, we have to keep checking those links.

Thanks again for an informative blog,
    Mark

    Doug,

One more tip. Check the search engines link popularity tools and see who they have indexed that links to you too. What you will find is that you might have 200 links back to you as reported by Yahoo and only 10 as reported by Google. I changed my policy and only will link back to sites whose link page is indexed by Google. If they are not, I don’t link to them. by doing that, I lost a lot of links, BUT my Google rank skyrocketed.

Are sites such as Traffic Swarm and other “traffic feeders” those types of useless sites that harm my site rankings? What is the key to knowing if they may present a harm, besides simply not having a working useful link to me?
